What is Art Therapy?

Art therapy is a form of psychotherapy that uses art-making as a way to express and explore emotions, thoughts, and experiences. It is facilitated by a trained therapist and can help improve mental, emotional, and physical well-being.

What happens during a session?

To begin, you will do a short exercise to help bring your focus into the space and regulate your body. During a session, you will engage in various art-making activities such as drawing, painting, or sculpting, guided by our therapist. The therapist may also engage in conversations to help you reflect on the artwork and the feelings or thoughts it evokes.

Who can benefit from art therapy at Farrell Arts?

Our services are designed to support a wide range of individuals, including children, adolescents, and adults. We have specialized services for children with autism, individuals with neurodivergence and LGBTQIA+ individuals, but anyone seeking to explore their creativity and emotions can benefit from art therapy.

Do I need to be good at art to participate?

No artistic skill is required to benefit from art therapy. The focus is on the process of creation and self-expression, not on the quality or aesthetics of the finished artwork.

About Farrell

Farrell Elliott, Art Therapist

Farrell Elliott is a non-binary art therapist, who is deeply passionate about assisting individuals on their paths of self-discovery. With over 14 years of experience working with children and youth, Farrell possesses a well-rounded understanding of their needs and the dynamics of peer interactions.
In their practice, they are firmly committed to an anti-oppressive framework that ensures a warm and inclusive environment for everyone, including members of the LGBTQ2IA+ community and those who live with disabilities. They create a welcoming space where individuals can freely explore various aspects of their identity, disabilities, ways of existing in the world, and personal boundaries. They foster a “brave” space, where open conversations about challenging topics are encouraged, and honest feedback is provided.

During sessions, a dynamic environment that accommodates different needs is provided. There’s a space for high-energy children/youth, one where they can express themselves through art, and areas for more introspective children/youth seeking a quiet presence to find comfort as they reflect on their art.

Their passion also extends to assisting individuals grappling with questions of identity, particularly those exploring the timeless question, “Who am I?” Through the use of metaphor and creative expression, Farrell guides clients in recognizing the pieces of their life’s puzzle.

Farrell’s educational background includes a Post Baccalaureate Diploma in Art Therapy from the Kutenai Art Therapy Institute. Furthermore, they have pursued advanced training in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) from the University of the Fraser Valley, seamlessly integrating mindfulness practices into the therapeutic journey.

Together, explore the transformative power of art therapy, celebrating your unique story and identity.
